Batel is simply an old Middle English variation of the word battle. 2 players begin on opposite sides of the board placing all 8 men, dark side up, along outer row (home row). See Fig. 1. Both players use both colors of checkerboard when setting up and moving. To win the game, be the first to move all of your men to the opponent's home row. After each move, you turn the man (player's piece) over so the other color of the piece is face up. If your man is dark side up, he may move 1 square forward, or 1 square to the left or right. If your man is light side up, you may move 1 square diagonally. A 'flank' is when 2 of your men are on adjacent squares to an opponent's man, and those 2 squares are on opposite sides (straight or diagonal) of your opponent. (See Fig. 2) If a move results in a flank of an opponent's man, the piece is sent back to his starting row. In Fig. 3, Red is a few moves from winning the game.
